Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved with National Beta?
The first school I taught in, Spearsville High School, had a Beta Club. I hadn’t heard of Beta before. I saw students excited about going to state convention and when the sponsor left our school, I volunteered to be the sponsor. This is my 26th year as a Beta Sponsor.
You’re more than a Beta Sponsor, you’re also a teacher. What is your educational background and teaching experience?
I’ve been a math teacher in the same district for 32 years. I graduated from Louisiana College.
How has the National Beta positively impacted your students, community, and school culture?
National Beta has had a great impact on my students following the Pillars of Beta. Students who don’t meet the grade requirement will often work diligently to meet that requirement so they can be invited to join. Our Betas are often asked to volunteer for school and community activities. They show leadership outside of Beta in the classroom, sports teams, and community.
Why do you think Beta is particularly beneficial for high school age students?
High school students can be easily influenced by their peers and social media. It’s refreshing to see students wanting to join Beta because they see students who are active and involved in something that is not only fun, but a positive influence.
What initiatives or projects have your Betas been involved in that you are particularly proud of?
In May, several Betas volunteered to help with our elementary school’s end of the year Field Day. I was able to witness them not just helping, but taking charge of several of the activities and running the events without the help of the adults in charge. Their interaction with the elementary students was something I enjoyed watching.
Can you share a particularly memorable moment or event from your time as a sponsor?
I’ve had several moments that have been memorable for me as a Beta sponsor. As a small school, we’ve always attended and participated in state convention, but never placed. I can still remember the first time our school’s name was called for placing at a state convention, it was so exciting to have one of my members walk across the stage with a plaque.
What are your goals for your Beta Club in the coming year?
I’d like to continue to grow our club and have students continue to serve our school and community.
Do you have any advice for new or prospective Beta Club sponsors?
New sponsors shouldn’t see Beta as a daunting club. Veteran sponsors and National Beta employees are always available to help and answer any questions they have.
