Who is J.W.?

J.W. Beta, more commonly referred to as “J.W.” is National Beta’s Mascot. J.W. was introduced as a Boston Terrier named after the National Beta Founder John W. Harris ahead of the 2016 National Convention in Orlando, Florida. It was determined that J.W. would be a Boston Terrier, after Wofford College’s mascot, to honor where our Founder graduated from years ago.

How to Participate in the Challenge

Option 1: Share with Younger Students

1. Arrange for members to visit with elementary-aged students and read the book, J.W. Helps Out. The story introduces J.W. and shares the message of his kindness.
2. Challenge students to complete 25 acts of kindness.
3. Give each student a J.W. cutout to take with them as they each do good deeds. Younger students may also be interested in using the digital version of J.W. You can email a copy of the guidebook to the students’ teacher.
4. Explain to students that after each kind act is completed, they should color in a dog bone on their progress sheet.
5. Follow up with students at a later date (we suggest 1 month) and celebrate those students who met the challenge in any manner of the club’s choosing. Ice cream parties are always a great way to celebrate!
6. Encourage all students to mail their J.W. cutout to a friend encouraging them to #BeLikeABeta.

Option 2: Kick-Start Service in Your Club

1. Explain to your club who J.W. is.
2. Challenge your Beta members to complete 25 acts of kindness in a specific period (we suggest 1 month).
3. Give each member a J.W. cutout or provide them with the digital version of J.W. Members should take a photo with J.W. after they complete each act. Encourage them to post their photo using #BeLikeABeta.
4. Explain to students that after each kind act is completed, they should color in a dog bone on their progress sheet.
5. Hang up #BeLikeABeta posters around your school to remind students about the challenge.
6. Follow up with students at a later date (we suggest 1 month) and celebrate those students who met the challenge in any manner of the club’s choosing.
